What's the goal of the community? This is a key consideration in the naming process for it.

Adding to what Joel (Salesforce) said: first figure out the goal. Then come up with a few options (no more than 5), then put it to a vote with your customers in the pilot, as well as key stakeholders in your company. Assign a weight for each cohort (like 60% customer/40% internal) and go with the winner—you make the call in the event of a tie.

Meaning if the goal of your community is for support deflection then you'll typically see those named “COMPANY Community” so it’s a clear connection to the company. If you have a community of practice or for your product advocates only then you'll usually see more creative names.

Yeah, good points. I've just been looking at how communities choose names. For example, CMAWeekly is very clear about the audience. For me, that was enough to want to join. Exit Five, on the other hand, was a very personal name for the founder (an exit ramp he took to get to a place he found relaxing and inspirational), but it seems to work as a vision for the community.

We tested a bunch of names with our customers but our legal team booed everything except Glean community and Gleaniverse. So we went with the thing that sounded more fun
