Does anyone have good ideas or advice for engaging your online community around product launches? Right now we do educational forum content that is more discussion-based, thought leadership written by champions, and our academy does education videos and workshops. We have tried AMAs as part of our post-launch playbook, but they always flopped when they were surrounding a new product
Some ideas:
Who inspired the new feature/product for the launch? Engage or celebrate them as part of it.
Opportunities to engage and activate the participants of a beta/pilot for it, assuming one happened.
Video interview with the product leader for the new feature/product on the value of it
Having beta participants join the conversation is one of the most impactful things I've seen in my current role!
Christine Newman good question. I'd say #1 is successful product adoption, and we are trying to build the confidence and peer proof that leads to that.
Gamified challenges with instructions on how to use the new features and asking community members to test them out and provide feedback to specific prompts.
For more major launches, you could also have a “community town hall” with the product managers where they can talk about the new features and community members have the opportunity to ask questions.
Christine Newman love the town hall idea!! Sort of tried something similar to the gamified challenges in the past, but again one of those things that didn't stick for whatever reason
The town halls work really well for us. We find that our power users LOVE having the opportunity to directly interact with our product teams.
I’d also schedule the town halls for a few weeks after a release…give folks some time to use it so they can come with really meaningful questions, and sometimes really meaningful feedback for the product teams as well!
I'm going to say something more broad than a clear tactic, but… Gain Marketing + Product Leadership buy-in for a new goal: All new launches require 1-2 advocates to close the beta/pilot by the PMs + PMMs for the Advocacy/Community team to activate through X, Y, or Z opportunities to support the launch.
Meaning if the users in it are not satisfied and seeing value from it, then it cannot launch yet.
This is a very timely question as it's something we're in the midst of as well! With our recent AI features, we've been piloted a sort of "1-2 punch" when it comes to the community which seems to be working well.
We have regular "AMA" sessions led by our product managers. I use "AMA" lightly because they are more so a webinar/live demo format where we encourage questions in the chat and for people to come off mute to ask questions.
We transitioned our invitation from simply within our community/email to in-app with Amplitude to target specific personas and that has made these 400+ attendance-getters.
Also important to have PMs, SEs, other internal SMEs answering questions in the chat!
We post the recording in the community as well as any unanswered questions with answers. We also share follow-ups with AMs and CSMs if their customers had pertinent questions or showed interest in learning more.
2. We take the same AMA topic and schedule a more informal "Talent Talk" a couple of weeks after the original webinar. This is customer-led and we tap into engaged beta testers or other early adopters. The format is 15-20 min of a "show and tell" of the new feature and then open it up to conversation.
Staff has a much lighter role in this one, where we really just make sure anyone who wants to talk gets the chance to
We record these on a case by case basis, depending on the topic and the type of content being shared (i.e. if it's a lot of proprietary information or showing their direct data, we don't record)
We post a recap of highlights, what we talked about and links to product resources discussed in the community afterwards. This is an opportunity to bring that product promotion piece in and throw some UTMs on links to see what traction we get.
