Hey CM friends! My sales team asked me to put together a simple menu of discounts they can offer customers in exchange for co-marketing, like 10% for logo use, 15% for a case study, or 20% for a speaking opportunity, etc...Has anyone put something like this together before, or have an example you could share?!
This has come up multiple times over the years. The problem with this is that even though they agree to doing a story, you may not want their story, it might not be a good story, or they may never follow through.
ah yes, the not following through part is what I'm worried about 🫠 we also have a lot of customers that give us logo rights "with written consent" then ghost us when we ask to use their logo 😆 The struggle is real
We're trying to approach this as "any discounting includes an upfront signature on our Marketing Release. This means the team may reach out to you to offer opportunities such as case studies, speaking at events, being quoted in content, providing reviews etc. Your participation is at your discretion at the time of offer, all the release does is give us permission to promote whatever activities you agree to." (Logo rights are written into our contracts, the redline option is removal or leave in as-is. We don't have bandwidth to manage one-off logo approvals. Similarly, we no longer redline our Marketing Release.)
^^ Notice I say "trying" as we're still working on alignment with Rev leadership and RevOps to build this into workflows and enablement practice.
The idea of giving a subscription discount for a one time engagement gives me icks. But I do have a menu where activities translate to program points.
I had a sales leader bring this up with me. He was like 'i've never seen it work well'. I never liked the idea of these (same "ick") but he was like "We're going to give them a discount anyway, might as well get something from it". I've drafted something and I'm waiting for his first review of it before socializing to other leaders. But I look at it more as "Here's our very short menu of 3 options" and then the enablement is more on the seller's side - like making sure they know that I have to approve the brand before they offer this discount, but the discount amount is up to them, etc. Haven't done this yet, though - and obviously there's always the risk they ghost us. But at least it's not a cold ask a year into deployment.
Sorry. Bad idea. This typically backfires because the POC with the customer usually doesn't have the authority. Works better when a sales team receives the incentive.
